Cougar Vineyard & Winery became a bonded winery in 2004 followed by purchasing the Temecula Valley Wine Country property in 2005 and finally opened its doors to the public after the 2006 crush. The owners of Cougar Vineyard & Winery in Temecula, California are a husband and wife winemaking team. Cougar Vineyard & Winery was created with the thought in mind "we want a winery that we want to visit all the time" and thus the winery was born. The environment at Cougar Vineyard & Winery is friendly, the staff is knowledgeable and the winemakers are accessible, and they love interacting with their customers to ensure that they experience the true essence of great wine tasting. At Cougar Vineyard & Winery you are surrounded by wine and the winemaking process, which not only lets you sample delicious wines but also learn and appreciate how great wine is created in the Temecula Valley Wine Country. Cougar Vineyard & Winery grows all Italian varietals including some that are not available anywhere else in the United States or rarely produced commercially, which means you, the customer, can experience wine indulgences at a beautiful location close to home. Cougar Vineyard & Winery is also one of the best and newest boutique wineries located on the "De Portola Wine Trail" in beautiful Southern California Temecula Valley Wine Country. It specializes in 100% Estate Italian varietals and all the exquisite wines are produced on-site, and you can even catch a glimpse of the winemaking process. Currently there are approximately 17 family acres of vineyards that are growing: Vermentino, Sangiovese, Aglianico, Montepulciano, Primitivo, Malvasia Bianca, Arneis, Pinot Grigio, Sagrantino, Nebbiolo, Brachetto d' Acqui and NegroAmaro. A little history on how the Cougar Vineyard & Winery got its start:
Cougar Vineyard & Winery is not the first home winery venture of the owners, in fact, they began making wine over 17 years ago in Texas. They started producing wine using kits; but making good wine in an 85 degree room wasn't easy. Even though the conditions weren't optimum for wine making, the owners managed to pull off some drinkable wine. They originally bottled under the Ironstone Winery label.
An opportunity to move to Seattle was met with smiles after the blistering Texas heat. There the owners began making wine from grapes obtained from Eastern Washington. They then stepped up the wine making operation from a small closet to a cellar dug into the hill below their home. The temperature and the grapes were much improved. During their stay in the always green city of Seattle, they made several trips to Buhl Idaho to visit their friend Terry White. On one such occasion they helped him plant an acre of Chardonnay grapes which had them thinking about a vineyard of their own. Unfortunately, they would have to wait since they couldn't grow anything around their property that wasn't snail and slug proof. However, they began producing some very good red wines and finally some white wines that were of very good taste and quality. They even entered and won 3rd place for their Semillon in 1998. After that, they began to bottle under the Cougar Mountain Winery label.
Finally, they moved to Fallbrook California which is just due South of the beautiful Temecula Valley Wine Country. One of the conditions of the house they were searching for was that it had to have at least an acre that could be planted with a vineyard or have an existing vineyard. Seven years in the home and they have planted 1000 vines. Along the Italian theme of the Sangiovese and Montepulciano they have planted Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and table grapes (for eating). In 2003 they won a Bronze in the Orange County Fair for their Sauvignon Blanc. Currently, they now bottle under the Cougar Vineyard & Winery label.
In 2005 they purchased the winery property in stunningly gorgeous Temecula Valley Wine Country and planted Sangiovese, Aglianico, Montepulciano, and Vermentino. Next door, at La Vigna e Destra, they continue to plant. Currently, there are Primitivo, Arneis, Malvasia Bianca, Pinot Grigio and rootstock. Cougar Vineyard & Winery is also seeking to add even more wines to their already impressive lineup. Cougar Vineyard 7 winery is now making estate wines from its vineyards that are of the highest quality and have amazing taste.
In the words of a friend and mentor, Lum Eisenman, some words that motivate us to grow good quality grapes and make good wine, "You can't make good wine from bad grapes but you can make bad wine from good grapes".
