Isn't there a tag that came with the cactus detailing its specifications? If so, it should give instructions as to its care. If not, check with the store or try to find a picture similar to the cactus you have on the Internet or in a book.
The site below has a cacti forum whose members could provide you with a better answer. It has plenty of pictures that you might consider comparing your cactus to, if you are so inclined to do so. I hope can identify your cactus and provide the best care for it.
When in doubt... it doesn't really matter all that much how often you water it. I have a few that I water sparingly and put in any type of sunlight and they've been living for over 5 years.
