Time Line
Using the NLP Time Line and anchoring to set goals for change in your life

There's a lovely NLP technique that you can use for preparation if you're considering making a change in your life whether that be leaving the workplace or rejoining it. It's called a Time Line. Let me talk you through it.
1) Imagine a line on the floor stretching from the past into the future
2) Stand on the point that for you represents today
3) Associate into this time. This means thinking deeply about what's going on in your life at the moment. What's going well and what would you like more of or what could be better still?
4) Now step forward along the line to a point in the future. You can step as far or as near as you feel confident.
5) What are you doing now? Where are you, what is happening in your life? What are you doing well, what would you like to be doing better? If you have identified something you'd like to be better at, walk back along your time line to the point in your life where you had that skill. At that point, associate into it and enjoy the feeling of having that skill. Remember what belief you had about having that skill and anchor it.*
*Anchoring is linking a skill or feeling with an action such as squeezing your ear lobe when the feeling is really strong. Make the action and stop as the feeling subsides. Do it at least 3 times to establish it as a strong connection.
6) With the skill anchored, return to today's position because you may want to make a different decision about your future.
7) Now step into the future again and visualise yourself doing what you dream of doing.
8) Walk forward again further into the future thinking about what you want to be doing next. You can go back along the time line at any point to pick up skills and return. Remember to first return to today's point to reflect before heading off into the future again.
9) When you've gone as far as you can visualise; go back to today's point and start making small steps towards your future and as you do so, note what each step means you have to do. These are your goals along the way. You may want to write these down.
10) Now take the first step towards your goal!
